At some point in your life you will be faced with some potentially tough decisions. Whether you’re interested in changing your career because you’ve been laid off or you realize you’re not happy with the direction your life is taking you, you may need to go back to college, take some training, or even go to truck driving school. If you have the desire to get into this career, you’re here to learn how to find the top grants for truck driving school.
Believe it or not, there are actually a number of truck driving school grants that are specifically designed to help someone just like you. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what you did for work in the past, or even whether you were convicted of a crime in the past (there may need to be a set period of time since your conviction in order to obtain work as a truck driver).
You can take advantage of many of those incredible programs designed to help people like you.
What is a grant?
A grant is a ‘the amount of money that is given to someone by a government, a company, etc., to be used for a particular purpose (such as scientific research) (Merriam-Webster).’
Planning on changing your career (or you’ve recently graduated high school and this is something you’ve always wanted to do) isn’t going to involve any scientific research, but those truck driving schools can cost a considerable amount of money.
That can make this dream seem almost impossible for some, especially when you’re barely scraping by enough money to make ends meet. Now, if you were to have to find a CDL training school in the area, and you contacted them and discovered just how much it costs, you may quickly decide this isn’t going to happen.
At least not now.
With government grants for truck driving school, you may not have to wait as long as you might have originally thought. It could be just a matter of weeks from the time you fill out the application to getting approval.
Where can you find various grants for CDL training?
One of the first ones to discuss is called a Pell Grant. This is a federal education assistance program that is designed to help students who require some type of financial assistance in order to get an education.
In order to apply for a Pell Grant, you will need to fill out a FAFSA student loan application (Federal Aid for Financial Student Aid). One of the reasons why this grant is so sought after is because it doesn’t need to be repaid (some grants act as low interest loans).
You will need to meet certain criteria, including income, in order to qualify, and you should know that because of the nature of these grants, competition is fierce.
Every state in the U.S. has different programs designed to help its residents. You can quickly and easily see what types of grants or financial assistance your particular state may offer, depending on your situation and circumstances, by visiting Ed.gov.
You could end up finding the perfect type of assistance to get you started in your dream of becoming a truck driver.
Another division of the federal educational loan system is known as Stafford Loans. Keep in mind that these are loans and if you end up choosing this option, they will need to be repaid.
These types of loans are provided by private financial institutions with the federal government backing them up. You could get your CDL training and become a truck driver using these loans, and even use some of the funds that may be left over each semester (period of time) for basic living expenses. Once you complete your CDL training, you will need to begin repaying the loan, but because it’s a low interest loan, it becomes similar to some of the programs you might receive from private trucking companies.
Specific Trucking Companies
There are numerous trucking companies all across the United States and while none of them offer CDL training grants, some actually offer reimbursement programs. Swift, for example, is one of them.
Swift Driving Academy CDL training costs about $3,900 and they reimburse that money over a period of 26 months if you end up employed with them for the duration. If you’re a U.S. Veteran, you may also qualify for a specific scholarship they make available to these former military servicemen and women.
Prime, Inc. is another that offers a training program. You may even qualify for free CDL training as long as you work for the company for one full year following your successful completion of the training program. Their program costs about $3,500.
Having a dream of becoming a truck driver can be exciting. When you have financial challenges and can’t afford the CDL training, grants and other assistance programs are ideally suited to provide you the support you may need to make this dream a reality.
